Precision Pain Management will advance the diagnostic and therapeutic expertise of the clinician. The emerging evidence for precision medicine in pain management will be presented with a particular focus on the clinical diagnostic approach used to differentiate nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain mechanisms. An in-depth review of the best evidence for a personalized pain medicine approach including physical, pharmacological, and psychologically informed treatment approaches for complex pain will be provided. This course is two full days and consists of a series of lectures, case study, practical sessions, and clinical applications.

***NOW INCLUDING NEW COMPREHENSIVE SECTIONS ON PAIN AND THE ATHLETE***

Upon completion of this course the clinician will be able to:

  • Phenotype nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain mechanisms.

  • Understand the functional and anatomical brain and nervous system changes in complex pain

  • Discuss the evidence on the relationship between pathology findings on imaging and pain presentation.

  • Perform a skilled subjective evaluation of the patient with consideration of illness perceptions and expectancy and their relationship to complex pain.

  • Perform a mechanisms-based objective examination to phenotype pain presentations.

  • Increase effectiveness of current therapies through application of psychologically-informed clinical practice principles including therapeutic neuroscience education and positive expectancy.

  • Understand the current best evidence pharmacological approaches to pain management.

  • Apply management skills according to the best evidence pain science for patients with complex pain including graded motor imagery, perceptual manipulation with virtual reality, cognition targeted exercise therapy, tactile acuity and sensory discrimination training, and advanced clinical neurodynamics.
