Who are we?

The Nova Scotia Orthopaedic Section is the provincial representation of the National Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. We are a group of local physiotherapists who strive to provide Maritime health professionals with continuing education and, networking opportunities in the realm of orthopaedic and manual/manipulative physiotherapy courses and seminars.

Our goal is to promote growth and development of Orthopaedic Physiotherapy in accordance with the National Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

Michael, originally from Newfoundland; completed his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology Co-op (honours) and his Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) - Clinical Exercise Physiologist certificate at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2014. He went on to further his education by completing his Masters of Science in Kinesiology - Exercise and Work Physiology at MUN in 2016 and then to complete his Masters of Science in Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University in 2018.

Michael is passionate about empowering individuals in order to achieve their goals, through providing education, exercise, manual techniques, and other evidence based techniques. 

Michael enjoys spending his time outside hiking and running; he also enjoys spending his time baking.

Originally from Ottawa, ON, Erica completed her Bachelors of Science Kinesiology with Honors at Dalhousie University in 2015. She then went on further her education by completing her Master of Science in Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University in 2017.

Erica is passionate about using exercise prescription, manual therapy and education to aid individuals with their physical activity goals.

Erica enjoys all things outdoors including running, swimming, and hiking with her dog Bindi

Joseph Ghosn PT

Joseph a Halifax native, received his Bachelor’s degree in Science (Kinesiology) from Dalhousie University in 2015. Joseph returned to Dalhousie for his Master of Science in Physiotherapy where upon graduating was awarded the Jane McAloney memorial prize for clinical excellence, and Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapists award for high manual therapy performance. Between 2011 to 2016 Joseph competed as a member of the Dalhousie Tiger’s Football team serving as team captain and, winning the league championship in 2016.

Joseph has a passion for sports and helping athletes return to play. Joseph has spent time working with teams such as the Dalhousie Tiger’s football team, Hockey Nova Scotia’s U16 Canada games hockey team, and the Halifax Xplosion women’s football team.

Joseph brings to the table a passion for exercise driven therapies accompanied by hands-on manual techniques to help achieve long lasting rehabilitation outcomes. Joseph is excited to help athletes and the community around Dalhousie live healthy, active lifestyles.

Emily Coolen

Originally from Halifax, NS Emily Coolen (she/her) completed her Bachelor of Science Kinesiology with First Class Honours, at Dalhousie University. She has worked as a personal trainer at the Dalplex for over 10 years with a specialization in older adult fitness. This work helped her to develop a passion for promoting fitness, function, and independence across the lifespan. It also inspired her to pursue her to complete her Master of Science in Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University.

Emily is passionate about combining her personal training experience and physiotherapy skills to help her clients achieve their maximum potential and live the life they want. Emily works with clients of all ages to help them achieve their goals, whether they are sport-related, health-related, or anything in between. She is a strong believer in the power of education and exercise and works to promote independence for all of her clients.

Emily has a special interest in chronic pain, older adult advocacy, and falls prevention, and hopes to pursue continuing education in these areas to further her physiotherapy practice.

In her free time, she enjoys surfing and hiking, and working with her rescue dog Tally.
